SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Veterans Day will always stand out in the hearts and minds of Missouri soldiers from the National Guard's 1107th Aviation Group who deployed Sunday morning.

"I love this country and that's why I'm going," Sergeant First Class Robert Wilson said, "It's kind of a special honor to be deploying just before Veterans Day."

Wilson said farewell to four children and seven grandchildren when he left for this tour.

"It's quite difficult to leave them at this time. They grow up so fast, that's nine months to a year that you are away from them," he said, "But the sacrifice is worth it if their freedoms are kept."

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon offered his words of support for the 100 soldiers and their families.

"I don't think I can overstate how important the work of the 1107th Aviation Group is to our nation's armed forces," he said.

This unit will help with air support in Kuwait and Afghanistan.

"And it is no accident that this elite group has been chosen at this time in history to perform this important mission," Nixon said.

And just as important, he said, is the support offered here at home for these soldiers until they return.

These men and women wave farewell to their families, who have a different perspective of Veterans Day this year.

And will celebrate to honor their Missouri soldiers and hope they return home safely.

This the fourth deployment for the unit.

It was formerly called the 1107th Theater Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group.

The soldiers will be conducting aviation depot repair and logistical operations in Afghanistan and Kuwait.

Their mission is expected to last about a year.
