Morning Sports Report - Sept. 12, 2013

Evangel starts its season this Saturday at at Kansas-Wesleyan. And big wins for both of Missouri's MLB teams.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Evangel Crusaders begin their season on Saturday at Kansas-Wesleyan.

Evangel finished 7-4 last season and return the core players from their offense, which was one of the best in the HAAC last year.

Record-setting receiver Jesse Vaughn returns after an All-America season. His quarterback Andrew Brimhall is back as well.

Brenton Illum enters his 4th season as head coach.

The Crusaders haven't won a HAAC title since 2005, and finished third last year, but Illum and his players say that's not what they're focused on.
"Last year we had a great year, and we just want to build off of that," said Vaughn. " We don't have any playoff or bust type goals, we just take it one game at a time. We just play our best."

Illum added, "We want to be a great football team and winning just naturally happens off of that. And so there's a lot of things that don't have to do with winning a conference title that we really put our emphasis on. Today it's winning practice. And if we win enough practices the games take care of themselves. That's really where our focus is. I want to be a national championship contender, and to do that there's a whole lot of details that need to happen along the way and that's where our focus goes."

Big wins for the Cards and Royals as we head down the stretch. St. Louis beats the Brewers 5-1 at Busch last night.
Cards were able to keep Pittsburgh at bay and hold on to their one game lead in the NL Central.
The Cards try to sweep Milwaukee tonight.

The Royals take down Cleveland 6-2 Wednesday.
That paired with a Boston win over Tampa means that Kansas City is two games out of the playoff hunt with 16 games to go.
They're off today, but start a big series with first place Detroit starting Friday.
