SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Big bucks and social media will help Springfield create a new Route 66 roadside park.

The city is using a crowd funding website called "Crowdit" to gather donations for the park, which will be built along College street near Fort.

Wednesday night, Crowdit held a party to solicit money for the park project.

Springfield's director of planning and development explains why this roadside park is important.

"It's not only an effort to honor Route 66, but also to revitalize the center city community, says Ralph Rognstad, director of Springfield  Planning & Development.  "And we've got a lot of people that are really excited about the project, and we hope other people will join in."

Crowdit will take donations for the park, online, for another 59 days.

As of 6am Thursday, Crowdit reports collecting $10,285 in pledges.  The original goal is $15,000.
