SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- We're in the final week of summer, but MoDOT is already thinking about winter.

The Missouri Department of Transportation announced Monday that it's already making preparations for the coldest months of the year.

The department plows nearly 34,000 miles of state routes in the winter. In the coming weeks, 2,400 maintenance crews will inspect equipment, make repairs, review snowplow routes, and complete more training.

MoDOT will also recruit on-call, emergency snowplow operators to fill in the gaps. If you're interested, you'd need a background check and drug screening; pay is $13.82 to $15.63 per hour, depending on experience.

For more information about winter weather or to apply to work as an emergency operator, visit www.modot.org or call 888-ASK-MODOT (888-275-6636).
