Missouri State Needs OT To Beat ISU

Missouri State beats Illinois State 78-70 in overtime.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo--The Missouri State Bears tipped off their 24th season in the Missouri Valley conference Thursday night against Illinois State.

The Bears rolling into the game with a 10-2 non conference record.

The voice of the Bears Art Hains calling his 1,000th Missouri State hoops game, and 2,000th Bears athletic event.

Illinois State attacking the Bears all night, Tony Wills drives the baseline and gets the hoop 10-5 Redbirds.

Then Illinois State's Zach Lofton gets the steal and the hoop, it's 15-12 Redbirds.

Keith Pickens follows this Nathan Scheer miss and the putback dunk it's a one point game.

Nixa's Austin Ruder with a three, it's 23-21 Illinois State.

But the Redbirds kept splashing threes, Daishon Knight with the three, it's 31-21 Illinois State.

The Redbirds led 41-31 at halftime. 

Second half, Illinois State's John Jones gets the dunk it's 57-49 Redbirds.

But that's when Missouri State rallies, Jarmar Gulley with the basket, it's a three point deficit.

Then the Bears get the steal Keith Pickens to Gulley it's 65-64.

The game would go into overtime.

Missouri State inside to Pickens to Gulley with this basket to make it 74-68 bears, Gulley scored 22 points, and the Bears rally to win in overtime 78-70.       

"As bad as Jarmar was in the first half, he was just as great the second half," said MSU coach Paul Lusk.  "He really did good things.  Pickens made big plays, they all  made big plays.  Like I said, more than anything they kept their composure and I'm very pleased about that."
