The Nikkei dropped 204 points today in trading in Tokyo.
On Wall Street, the Dow gained 7 points.
And the Nasdaq gained 10

Wall Street is awaiting today's employment report for August. Many traders believe that if the report is positive, the Federal Reserve will begin cutting back its economic stimulus program later this month. Most economists expect the August unemployment rate held steady at 7.4 percent and that the economy added about 177,000 jobs.

Mortgage rates inched higher this week amid more signs of a strengthening economy. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac says the average rate on the 30-year loan was 4.57 percent -- up from 4.51 percent last week while the average on the 15-year fixed mortgage rose to 3.59 percent.

United Airlines is putting almost 600 furloughed pilots back to work. The airline says it needs the pilots to meet its future staffing needs. United and Continental merged in 2010. The recalled pilots are from the United side of the business. Pilots at United and Continental recently agreed to a joint union contract.
