SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A Springfield man has been sentenced to life in prison for sexually abusing his step-daughters.

According to Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Patterson, John Wesley Kimberlin, 36, of Springfield, was sentenced on Dec. 2 for sexually abusing his step-daughters between Feb. 2003 and Sept. 2005. The victims, who were under the age of 12 at the time of the crime, waited five years to disclose the abuse.

Kimberlin was convicted of statutory sodomy in the first degree, child molestation in the first degree, statutory sodomy in the first degree and statutory sodomy in the first degree.  He was also charged with statutory rape in the first degree, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict on the count.

Judge Thomas Mountjoy sentenced Kimberlin to 30 years (or life) in the Missouri Department of Corrections for each conviction, ordered to run concurrently. Probation was denied.

During sentencing, Kimberlin reportedly argued that the victims of the abuse continued to visit him and show affection towards him, even after the abuse, and suggested that this was an explanatory factor.

Judge Mountjoy dismissed that argument, noting that the victims’ behavior was not uncommon, especially when children are abused by adults they love and trust. He further noted that the victims will live with the consequences of the defendant’s abuse for the rest of their lives.

During the trial, the court also found Kimberlin was a prior and persistent felony offender.

According to a news statement, his prior convictions include burglary in the second degree, stealing, driving while intoxicated, tampering in the first degree, knowingly burning, and endangering the welfare of a child.  The latter charge stems from an incident in which Kimberlin provided alcohol to his step-son until his blood alcohol content was .212.
