Local Schools Compete for Donations in Food Fight Food Drive

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Ozarks Food Harvest’s Food Fight food drive is back for the third year.  The concept for the event is simple, but the impact is huge.

Food Fight calls together local schools across the Ozarks to compete in a weeklong food drive during Hunger Action Month.  Food donations from each school will be weighed at The Food Bank after food is delivered or picked up.

The school with the highest pounds of food collected per student becomes the Food Fight Champion and wins the traveling trophy to be proudly displayed until next year’s food drive.

In the first two years of the event, more than 8,000 pounds of food were collected from area schools.  That provided more than 7,000 meals to families in southwest Missouri alone.

Pleasant View Middle School is one of the local schools battling it out to win the coveted trophy and the students there are not ashamed to make last-ditch appeals to friends like the Damaged Freight Store.

“I called them yesterday and said can I have some food to help out,” says Jadan Adams, a student at Pleasant View Middle School.  “They said yes, of course. So, (I got) three boxes and a bag…”

Besides the bragging rights and trophy, students are vying for donations because they know the impact it can make.

“I know I have food every night,” says Trey McDaris, also a student at Pleasant View Middle School.  “So it makes me feel good to know someone won’t go to bed on an empty stomach.”

McDaris says he made a last minute run to WalMart last night to top off his donation.

Friday, Sept. 20 is the last day for schools to collect donations.

The winners of Food Fight 2013 will be announced Sept. 25, after all the donations are weighed and “pounds per student” is calculated.

Cherokee Middle School has been the school to beat, with two consecutive wins already tucked under their belts.
