HOWELL COUNTY, Mo. -- The second man who escaped from the Jackson County, Arkansas jail Monday has died in a car crash.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office received notice from the Howell County Sheriff's Office in Missouri that while leading authorities on a chase, Steven Mitchell, 39, wrecked his vehicle and died.

Mitchell and Steven Reed escaped the Jackson County Jail on Monday morning. Reed was caught Monday evening, but Mitchell remained on the loose.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says Mitchell led troopers on multiple pursuits in Howell and Shannon Counties Tuesday afternoon.

Around noon, Troop G of the Highway Patrol received notification that Mitchell was possibly in Howell County in the Mountain View area. At some point in the afternoon, law enforcement officers saw what they believed to be the suspect's car, a white Nissan Altima. A pursuit ensued and the vehicle was lost, however, authorities apprehended a woman believed to have been in the suspect's vehicle.

At this time, it's not known if the vehicle belonged to the woman.

Highway Patrol representatives say that around 2:40 p.m. the vehicle was spotted again, and another pursuit ensued. The vehicle then ran off-road and crashed on Route T south of County Road 687.

The female is being held in custody on possible charges of aiding a fugitive.

Reed has been charged with felony first-degree escape, which carries a 6-30 year sentence and a fine of up to $20,000. He is back in the Jackson County Jail on $1 million bond.
