Helms to Run for Presiding Commissioner

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A Greene County leader has his sights set on a different office.

Today, Greene County Circuit Clerk Steve Helms announced his candidacy for Presiding Commissioner.

Helms wants to replace Jim Viebrock, who announced he will not seek a second term in office.

Helms says he wants to help shore up the county's cash crunch, which he blames on a 1997 law enforcement tax that the county shares with the City of Springfield.

"It was when our county leaders struck a deal with our city, that if they would support a tax we would give them part of it. Well, unfortunately they jumped on that gravy train and since then we've given them over 95 million dollars out of 160 million dollars that have been collected for the county."

Today, Viebrock announced his endorsement of Helms.  Viebrock's term goes through January 2015.
