SPRINGFEILD, Mo. -- A donation of a different kind aims to help prevent fire deaths.

Thursday, the Home Builders Association presented 400 new smoke alarms to the Springfield Fire Department as part of the group's Home Builders for Fire Safety Program.

The fire department offers free alarms to families in need and it's often in need of more devices.

“Most of the fires that are out there are in existing homes,” says Mike Benna of the Home Builders Association Board. “And prior to building codes requiring a smoke detector. So, smoke alarms are actually the number one thing to prevent fire deaths. “

The HBA has donated more than 1,000 smoke alarms to local fire departments in recent years.
