Skelton died October 28 at a Virginia hospital, surrounded by his family and friends.

His longtime staffer, Russell Orban, had said Skelton had entered the hospital a week prior with a bad cough.  His obituary lists pneumonia as the cause of death.

The Missouri Democrat won on his first run in 1976 and stayed on until losing in 2010 to Republican Vicky Hartzler.

Skelton, 81, was considered a champion of the military during his 34 years in the House of Representatives.  He served as a ranking member of the powerful House Armed Services Committee and is credited by many with helping save Fort Leonard Wood and Whiteman Air Force Base from military cuts when installations were being closed and consolidated in the early 90's.
