SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft returned to his alma mater Tuesday for a speech before students at Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri.

Ashcroft gave the keynote address on this Constitution Day, part of Christian Citizenship Week at the university.

The Springfield native has been a regular presenter at the university for more than 35 years, speaking at graduations, homecomings and lectures.

Regarding Monday's shooting in Washington, he told KOLR10 the U.S. must be aware of the dangers of our society and the importance of the right kind of security. He also expects an investigation will determine what led to the shooting and how to prevent one from happening again.

He says we should also consider how our country promotes violence. According to CBS News, Aaron Alexis, the gunman responsible for the shooting, has a history of gun related crimes, but was never prosecuted for them.

Ashcroft says it's difficult to tell if those with a criminal history are capable of committing more serious crimes.

"Sometimes the proof is contrary to the fact that a person is safe and it only manifests when the person acts out so substantially that the lives of others in a significant amount of others are lost."
