VERONA, Mo. -- An unusually large amount of absences at Verona Elementary, Junior and Senior High schools forced administrators to close for Friday.

Parents received calls about the closure on Thursday afternoon.

"I am glad to hear that the school is canceling due to the sickness, I think that's good," parent Sandra Freiburger said.

Superintendent Tony Simmons said the illness spread to both teachers and students.

"We've got several teachers out. We had a hard time finding substitutes, and then we've got a lot of kids sick and going home today," Simmons said.

Simmons said the school will be disinfected on Friday. Maintenance crews will wash and spray all of the surfaces that the children touch.

About 400 students attend classes in Verona.

"A small handful of students can make a big difference in our students," Simmons said.

"Our primary concern is obviously the health and welfare of the teachers, the staff and the students as well," Freiburger said.
