Farmers Frustrated by Bridge Construction Around Lebanon

LEBANON, Mo. -- Drivers in Laclede County may need to allow for extra travel time.

Bridges on Route 5 (south of Lebanon) and Route 32 (east of Lebanon) are closed. The work is part of the Missouri Department of Transportation's 4-month construction project.

The old bridges, built in the 1930s, were narrow and without shoulders. The new bridges will include two 11-foot lanes with 3-foot shoulders.

MoDOT is able to save taxpayer money by using a detour, instead of building a temporary bridge. The detour is still an inconvenience to some, like local resident Keith Stoltenow.

"Well my neighbor farms and he's got cattle. In order to move the hay just across the bridge he's gotta take the detour. So a 15-minute trip for him, with a big truck, you're talking 45 minutes," says Stoltenow.

MoDOT plans to finish the project sometime between August and September.
