SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A family flees a fire in the middle of the night, which heavily damages their home in west Springfield.

It happened just before 1:00 am at a house in the 2400 block of W. Camelot. That's near W. Sunshine and West Bypass.

Shawn Crump of the Battlefield Fire Department says the fire was started by smoking materials on the outside of the house.

Crump says the family living there was able to escape with no injuries.  One firefighter suffered a minor ankle injury.
Crump says damage to the house was significant.
