SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Although Springfield schools begin next Tuesday, some kindergartners showed up Tuesday when Weller Elementary put on a screening event.

The event was a chance for teachers to get to know the kids and parents.

It's also a chance for the teachers to find out how much the kids know, and how ready they are for school.

They asked the kids about colors, shapes, letters, numbers, writing and coloring.

“It helps the kids because they are not as scared, because a lot of times kindergarten's scary the first day you come in, you've never gone to school, half of them haven't even been to preschool yet, and so it's scary for them,” says Carrie Norrell, a kindergarten teacher. “And so it's a good opportunity for them to see the school, and they get to meet us, and they get to meet other teachers that they'll see at school."

This is the second year Weller did this screening. It is not required, but teachers find it helpful.
