WAYNESVILLE, Mo. – Two Waynesville High School students were accepted to U.S. service academies by U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill Thursday.

Adriana Shanahan was accepted to U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Katherine Mason was accepted to U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

20 nominees from across the state were nominated by McCaskill and accepted appointments to the four academies that require a congressional nomination for the Class of 2019.

"Missourians everywhere should be proud of these students and their families for showing such dedication and commitment to serving our great nation," said McCaskill, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, in a statement. "Their leadership and courage showcase the patriotism and sense of duty that run deep in our state."

Students were selected based on strong record of academic achievement, leadership, community service, and participation in extracurricular activities.

Missourians interested in applying for a service academy nomination in the future are encouraged to visit McCaskill’s website.
