SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- More than a month after a drowning, Siloam Springs says safety is a top concern.

Evan Thomas, 16,  drowned at the at the Siloam Springs Whitewater Recreation Park in the Illinois River in mid-June.

Sunday, people were invited back out to the Whitewater Recreation Park Sunday to learn about safety on the rapids.

The city partnered with the local chapter of the American Canoe Club to teach proper techniques on the water. Everyone at the class learned methods to keep themselves and friends safe when they're on the water.

The river is a fast-flowing rapid and the city says it's important for the public to be prepared on the water.

"Certainly, the tragedy is in the back of our mind and certainly, if there are any incidents in the future, we hope that they can be prevented through forums such as this," said Greg Neely, the city's public safety director.

The city says it plans to partner with more water safety groups and have more classes like this in the future.
