JOPLIN, Mo .-- Local emergency responders are learning how to use social media to respond to the next disaster.
JOPLIN, Mo .-- Local emergency responders are learning how to use social media to respond to the next disaster.

The National Disaster Preparedness Training Center walked through some options with about 30 workers Tuesday. That includes using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media sites to learn more about the situation, and pass along important information to those affected by it.

"That's really what this class is all about, making it not so scary for those emergency managers. Because they can be apprehensive because there's a whole fire hose of information," said Christopher Tarantino, National Disaster Preparedness Training Center.

Suggestions included getting familiar with different types of social media before the next disaster. Also, encouraging others to sign up for disaster related apps to get ready before a storm.
