CLIMAX SPRINGS, Mo. -- The charitable organization Community 4 Kids helps families in the town of Climax Springs every year, thanks to donations.

This year organizers decided to host a Thanksgiving dinner and they received an overwhelming response.

"Initially it was going to be for the kids and their parents that we have helped in past years," Organizer Dick Smith said, "Then we decided let's open it up to the community and that's what we have done."

The town has just over 100 people, but 600 people from surrounding areas gathered for the event hosted at the school.

"In the education of our kids its a team effort and we're trying to bring that team together," Superintendent Nathan Barb said.

He said he's proud to partner with Community 4 Kids in bringing people together for the holidays.

"We ask a lot of our community through fundraisers things like that and this is our opportunity as educators and as the kids to be able to give back to our community," he said.

Kids from the school volunteered at the event, serving tremendous amounts of food like 44 turkeys, 25 gallons of gravy, and hand peeling 250 pounds of potatoes.

"We feel that this is something we can do for our community and help them out," Barb said.

"There are a lot of people in the community in the school district community that are sitting alone on Thanksgiving day," Smith said, "I think it's a good thing to provide them an opportunity to celebrate with others the meaning of Thanksgiving."

With the success of this year's efforts, Community 4 Kids and the school district hope this new Thanksgiving tradition continues for many years to come.
