Summer Agriculture Academy Underway

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The George Washington Carver Agriculture Academy is underway in Springfield.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The George Washington Carver Agriculture Academy is underway in Springfield.

The summer program introduces high school students to careers in agriculture.

Junior and senior high students throughout the state were hand-picked to attend after writing an essay, getting letters of recommendation and having good grades.

Organizers hope the program shows students that there are more jobs available in agriculture, than just production-based.

To do that, the teens will participate in workshops, presentations and field trips.

"For me, it was the animal science part of it,” says junior Bailey Adam. “Like right now, I'm working with the horses, because animals are my passion and that's maybe what I want to do in college. So, it's really interesting for me to see what I may be getting myself into, I guess."

The academy takes place through Friday, July 25, on the Missouri State University campus.
