NIXA, Mo.-- Nixa students are heating things up in the kitchen with the 2014 Student Iron Chef competition Feb. 8.

This year the competition will be the Food Truck Mash-Up

This year's event will be held from 9 am until 2 pm at Mathews Elementary in Nixa, Mo.

Teams of students in the K through 4th grade category were invited to create a delicious signature food truck inspired cold side dish that would pair well with a food truck style taco using healthy ingredients.

Teams of students in the 5th through 12th grade category were invited to create a delicious signature food truck inspired warm entree taco dish using healthy ingredients.

The warm entree cooking portion is a new addition this year to the competition.

Recipes are originals from the students and will be easy for attendees to replicate and make at home.

Last year, over $1000 in cash prizes were given for the winning recipes.

The purpose of the event is to encourage students to cook and experience how to combine different flavors in a healthy way.

The free event is open to the public.
