Springfield's Library Center to Offer Passports

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Springfield's Library Center will soon offer passports for those planning to travel outside the U.S.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Springfield's Library Center will soon offer passports for those planning to travel outside the U.S.

Beginning June 9, people will be able to apply for a passport.

The library's staff has undergone the government's required training for handling passport applications. The Library Center also purchased the equipment to handle the process, which was about $600.

Library management says this new service will make getting a passport much more convenient.

"The post office you need to set up an appointment and they have more restricted hours,” says Gary Wilson, planning and development librarian. “We think this will be a value added service for people that want to come on the evenings or weekends. Whatever time works best for them."

The Library District applied to be a passport acceptance facility two years ago.

Wilson also says the library can be used to seek other travel information you may need.

The library also wants you to bear with them as their entrance is under construction.

Beginning Monday, June 2, the front entrance will be closed.

Workers will work on tearing down the 14-year-old canopy and replacing it with a new one.

There will be signs up alerting visitors to use the south side entrance through the Mudhouse Cafe.

The new canopy will look better and solve some current problems the old one brings.

"So that no moisture or water will get down on the tiles,” Library Center Branch Manager Jessie Alexander-East explains the reasoning behind the construction. “It makes a slick mess sometimes when people are coming into the building. The color is going to be green with a little bit of white, so it will be a nicer color. It will be a nice new hat for the Library Center, a little bit of a facelift."

The closure will not affect any library programs and construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of June.
