SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The cause of an engine fire that destroyed a Springfield Public Schools bus this morning is undetermined at this time, according to city fire officials.

The fire, which occurred about 8 a.m. today, was in a bus that had been started and moved to allow snow plows to clear the parking lot at the district's transportation center of Chestnut Expressway, according to schools spokeswoman Teresa Bledsoe.

The bus appears to be a total loss, she said.

Cara Erwin, with the city's fire department, said the fire started in the engine while the driver was in the bus barn. Mechanical failure was cited as the cause of the fire, but the exact cause is undetermined.

There were no passengers or drivers on the bus at the time. Springfield schools are closed today due to inclement weather.
