SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A Springfield man critically burned in a house fire on Jan. 16 succumbed to his injuries Tuesday.

According to the Springfield Fire Department, Derrick Pelliccio, 31, of Springfield died just before 6 a.m. after suffering critical burns sustained from a fire on Mount Vernon St. in Springfield on the afternoon of Jan. 16.

An investigation by the Springfield Fire Department found Pelliccio, along with Rachel Purcell, 28, were asleep in a bedroom of the home on the 2000 block of Mt. Vernon St. when the fire took place.

According to the fire department, one of the three children in the home used a long-stemmed butane lighter to ignite bedding materials on fire.

Pelliccio and Purcell escaped the blaze, but both sustained significant burns.

The three children, a five-year-old girl, a two-year-old boy and a one-year-old boy, escaped the home with one other adult unharmed.

Fire department officials say no smoke alarm was found in the home.

Purcell remains hospitalized.
