Springfield Cardinals Work Out At Hammons

The Springfield Cardinals held their first workout at Hammons Field this season.
The Springfield Cardinals have flown north for the summer, and are getting ready to open up the new season Thursday night at Hammons Field.
This is the tenth season of Cardinals AA baseball in Springfield.

The Cardinals hit the Hammons Field diamond Tuesday for a workout and to meet the media prior to opening night.

Springfield will have a 25 man active roster on Thursday night.
Of the 25, 13 players spent at least a portion of last season in Springfield playing in the Texas League.

Among the big stars on hand will be Cuban shortstop Aledmys Diaz and the cardinals' minor league Pitcher of the Year Zach Petrick.

Mike Shildt is starting his third season as Springfield's manager and says this year's team has a nice blend of youth and experience.
"We have a little bit of both.  We have some guys where this is their first foray into the Texas League in Springfield.  It's really great to see them come into this stadium and see how nice it is," says Shildt. "And look up and see what a beautiful field we have.  It's a great opportunity for them.  And we have some guys who are coming back and have some experience at this level.  Yes it's a nice blend."

"I can't wait," says outfielder Mike O'Neill.  "I personally have been working out since December, months and spring training and all the games.  Now it actually counts come Thursday and I personally can't be more excited."
