Sluman, Funk Lead Soggy Legends of Golf

The Legends of golf endured two rain delays in its opening round.
RIDGEDALE, Mo--A star-studded marquee of legendary golfers are gathered south of Branson at the Big Cedar Lodge Legends of Golf.

But mother nature intruded on the a-list of golf greats.

KOLR 10's Megan Rice has the soggy details.

Megan Rice/KOLR 10 Sports:"It's a beautiful course and beautiful weather now, but that wasn't the case earlier.  Where the first round of the Legends tournament had to start several times today."

It was quite the power pairing to start out the first round of the legends tournament. Jack nicklaus took the first swing to open things up at top of the rock. Seems fitting since he built the thing. Nicklaus would then tap in putt to par the first hole for him and gary player in an alternate shot format.
To hole 3. Where magical things happened all day.

The team of ben crenshaw and jerry pate found themselves off the green. But no problem for crenshaw hit chips in the incredible shot to birdie the hole.

Crenshaw and pale finished even and tied for 20th.

Later on hole three nick faldo and eduardo romero on a team. And that's a good thing for faldo when romero can do this. Drains teh long birdie putt to put them at one under. They were five under thru 17 and tied for the best at top of the rock.

And then came the rain.... and lots of it.

There were two weather delays putting things roughly 3 hours off track.

When play resumed tom watson and andy north would tee off on hole 10.

Where watson would tap this in for par.

Watson and north finished at five under and tied for the lead at top of the rock.

Tom Watson/Team at -5:"We started off with a bogey on the first hole on alternate shot.  We played pretty well after that.  We had some opportunties that we lost out there.  But my partner made some great putts out there for birdies."

Over at buffalo ridge the team of jeff sluman and fred funk working together.

Sluman hits the long birdie on hole 9 to go 7 under.

Sluman and funk lead all scores with 7 under thru 12.

Back on the top of the rock.

Gary player and jack nicklaus would finish the day.

As player taps it in for birdie.

They finished one over.

Gary Player/Team at +1: "If you look our round, we probably had eight putts that we could have made.  Not long ones.  And we just didn't hole the putts, that basically was it.  Jack's done a magnificent job here."

Megan Rice/KOLR 10 Sports: "At Top of the Rock Megan Rice KOLR 10 sports."

Despite all the rain, all the golfers got their first round in.

Fred Funk and Jeff Sluman are tied with Billy Andrade and Tommy Armour at nine under.

Russ Ccochran and Kenny Perry along with Jay Haas and Ben Jacobsen are just one back at nine under.

Two teams are tied at eight under.
