SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Officials of the Springfield public school district will start interviewing candidates for superintendent today.

13 people applied for the position to succeed Dr. Norm Ridderr, who announced he is leaving the district by June 30, 2014, although his current contract runs through June 30, 2015.  Dr. Ridder was hired as SPS' 13th superintendent in July 2005.

The school board will meet Wednesday night to decide which candidates will be finalists in the process.

Those chosen to move forward will be brought to Springfield for formal interviews next week.

R-12 officials say they hope to make a final decision on a new superintendent in early March.
