SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A record number of students participated in Thursday night’s Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC) commencement at the JQH Arena. 742 students crossed the stage to become college graduates.

This year, OTC gave out more than 2,000 certificates and degrees to graduates, according to a news statement.

During Thursday night’s commencement ceremony, Attorney General Chris Koster was the featured speaker.

“You have placed a bet on yourself and that is a habit you will tap again and again,” Koster told the graduates. “Your accomplishment tonight is a bet on your success and a better tomorrow.”

A special tribute was paid to Special Agent Sgt. Joseph M. Peters, an OTC graduate who was killed from injuries sustained during a blast on Oct. 6, 2013 in Afghanistan. During the ceremony, Sgt. Peters was awarded the College’s 2014 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award.

Sgt. Peters’ father, Dennis, who is OTC’s veterans service representative, received a standing ovation as he accepted the award from Dr. Hal Higdon, chancellor of Ozarks Technical Community College.
