SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-- The Annual Park Day celebration is continuing Saturday with the Park Day Reunion Picnic, Parade, and Dance August 2.

The area African American community has been celebrating the 4th day of August since 1865, the date that news was received of the end of slavery.

It was officially called Park Day in 1952 when the once one-day gathering was first created. Now the event spans three days of varying activities, now sponsored by the Springfield Reunion Club, The Springfield-Greene County Park Board, Ladies Civic League, and the local branch of the NAACP.

This year’s theme for the reunion celebration is ‘Continuing the Tradition’.

Saturday’s main events:

The Park Day Parade is at 12 pm and will feature Cheryl Clay, President of the NAACP of Springfield, as the 2014 Grand Marshall.

The Park Day Reunion Picnic will be from 1:30 pm to 4 pm at Silver Springs Park in Springfield.

The Park Day Reunion Dance will be from 9 pm to 1 am at the University Plaza Hotel. Admission is $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
