Morning Sports Report - June 24, 2014

Marco Gonzales leaves Springfield for the big leagues. Dan Lucy has your Tuesday morning sports report.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo--It didn't take Marco Gonzales long to make it to the big leagues.

The St. Louis Cardinals drafted the left handed pitcher with its first round pick last year.

Monday, the team promoted the 22-year old straight from Springfield to St. Louis.

And Gonzales will join his new big league team in his home state of Colorado.

Marco Gonzales is from Fort Collins and he'll start against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.

Gonzales is taking the place of lefty Jaime Garcia who was put on the 15-day disabled list Sunday.

Michael Wacha was also put on the DL at the same time.

Gonzales joined AA Springfield in the middle of May from Palm Beach.

In his seven starts, Gonzales is 3-2 with a 2.33 earned run average.

He also won two games at Palm Beach.

Gonzales was supposed to start for the north in the Texas League All-Star game Tuesday night in Little Rock.

In Major League Baseball Monday, The St. Louis Cardinals blank the Rockies, 8-0.
And Kansas City takes one from LA, 5-3.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo--Major League baseball drafted two Missouri State baseball Bears earlier this month.

In our Bear Nation report, it appears that one of those players will return for his senior season.

Infielder and catcher Eric Cheray indicated on twitter that he's going to return for his senior season.

Cheray also told The Springfield News-Leader that being drafted by the Oakland A's in the 17th round was nice.

But he can benefit from a senior season at Missouri State.

Last year, Cheray hit .290 with the Bears.

He's playing in a summer college league in North Carolina.
