OZARK, Mo. -- The only domestic violence shelter in Christian County is closing until October.

The shelter needs the community's support for some renovations.

Freedom's Rest provides a place for women and their children to stay if they're escaping an abusive relationship, but the facilities are more than 50 years old.

So the shelter is closing for six weeks to repair and update.

Freedom's Rest is often the only place Christian County women and their families have to stay when fleeing domestic violence.

"It can often times escalate to something where they would die," Christian Co. Family Crisis Center Exec. Dir. Matthew Evans said, "You know it's really important that there is a safe place for them to go."

Evans said that after ten years and use by thousands of families, that safe place needs updating.

"The living conditions of our shelter are not up to the standards of what we feel is acceptable," he said.

Most of the existing furnishings were used when they arrived here ten years ago.

Evans said everything must be replaced.

The shelter will be closed for the next six weeks for renovations.

"We're doing everything from the doorknobs to the bathroom sinks," he said.

They're asking for donations to help with the 30,000 dollar price tag, as well as volunteers to help.

"And then we also have the opportunity for people to adopt a room and help us actually remodel the room," Volunteer Coordinator Jessi Bartolotta said.

And while the space is under construction, Evans said they will be referring women who need help to shelters nearby.

"We'll be losing rooms, but not that ability to make those referrals and find them those resources that they need," he said.

The shelter hotline will still be working 24-7 for those who need help.

That number is 417-299-2494.
