Authorities tell CBS affiliate KMOV a single aircraft crashed near Creve Coeur Airport.
The crash occurred near the eastbound lanes shortly before 5 a.m. Firefighters extinguished a fire at the scene.
Authorities closed both directions of the highway, then reopened the westbound lanes. As of 6:30 a.m., all but one eastbound lane are reopened, Maryland Heights police said.
Fire officials said the pilot contacted them by cell phone after the crash. He was taken to a hospital. Officials believe the pilot, who was alone in the plane, was making an approach for a landing when the crash occurred.
The airport is just east of Highway 364, also known as the Page Avenue extension.
