Nixa Schools See Safety Upgrades

NIXA, Mo. -- School buildings in Nixa are getting a safety upgrade.
NIXA, Mo. -- School buildings in Nixa are getting a safety upgrade.

The district is replacing exterior doors on all its buildings with ones that have tighter seals and should help reduce energy costs.

Nixa is also transitioning from keys to cards that will allow access to building doors.

Leaders say this system allows all exterior doors to be locked from one central location in the event of a school safety event.

"We spend a lot of money each year on keys,” says Zac Rantz, director of communication for Nixa Public Schools. “People loose their keys or copy keys they aren't supposed to. So now we can just issue a fob, if they loose their fob we just deactivate it. Versus having to re-key the whole building.”

Nixa has also installed impact resistant film on the doors to slow any potential intruder.

Bullet proof windows have been installed for office managers.
