SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The third anniversary of a citywide National Night Out is planned in Springfield tonight.  Other events are planned in cities across the region and country.

The City of Springfield says the free event coincides with the national public safety event and is free to the public.

Crime and safety informational booths, prescription drug take-back and games will be at Meador Park, 2500 S. Fremont Ave., from 6 p.m. until sundown.

Participants can also tour fire, police and EMS vehicles.

Donation of a canned good will get you free pool admission from 6-8 p.m., otherwise admission will be $1.

Nixa is also planning a community event from 6-8:00 pm.  The Nixa National Night Out will be held at the Community Center on N. Taylor Way and is free to attend.

National Night Out celebrates the culmination of crime prevention activity in all Springfield neighborhoods: people working together in associations and other groups to prevent and address crime and other neighborhood problems.

The event also promotes healthy neighborhoods and encourages people to get out and get to know one another.

“It is an occasion to celebrate past successes, discuss current challenges or issues, and re-dedicate collaborative efforts with neighbors, police, businesses and others to improve the quality of life in our city,” said Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams.

Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide.
