SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Missouri State Board extended Missouri State University President Clifton “Clif” Smart’s contract by four years and added a 1.5 percent salary increase.

According to a statement from the university, Smart’s term will now continue through June 30, 2022.

“The Board feels that Clif has done an outstanding job as president of Missouri State,” sasy Beverly Miller, Board of Governor’s chair, in the statement. “The contract extension underscores our confidence in his ability to move the university in the right direction. So many good things are happening in the Missouri State system, and we feel strongly about supporting his leadership of the university well into the future.”

The contract extension comes after an electronic survey that evaluated Smart on nine categories: strategic leadership, educational leadership, organizational management, financial management, fundraising, external and internal relations, board and governance relations and personal characteristics and values.

Smart also presented his self-assessment to the Board during an executive session in June.

Along with the contract extension, Smart will receive a 1.5 percent salary increase.

According to the statement, the Board was prepared to offer a more significant increase, but deferred to Smart’s request that, in light of budgetary concerns, he receive the same 1.5 percent increase provided to faculty and staff.

The statement says Smart plans to donate the $40,000 housing allowance to the Foundation again this year. Of the total, $30,000 will be the third installment to endow the Gail and Clif Smart Professorship in Agriculture, which began in October 2012. The remaining $10,000 will go to The eFactory in honor of former MSU president Dr. Michael Nietzel.

Smart was named interim president June 27, 2011 and became the 11th president of Missouri State on Oct. 16, 2012.
