Missouri Sets Execution Date for Winfield

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The execution date for another Missouri death row inmate is set.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The execution date for another Missouri death row inmate is set. 

The state Supreme Court Friday ordered John E. Winfield be put to death June 18 for the murders of two women in the St. Louis area in September 1996.  The shootings took place during a domestic disturbance between Winfield and his former girlfriend.  She was also shot, but survived.

Winfield was found guilty of the shootings in 1998 but his case has been through a number of challenges and appeals since.

Unless the execution is stayed by a higher court, Winfield will be the fifth person put to be death in Missouri since the beginning of the year.  Herbert Smull was executed Jan. 29, Michael Taylor on February 26, Jeffrey Ferguson on March 26 and William Rouson was executed April 23.
