According to a recent study from the Pew Charitable Trust, only 11 percent of Missouri's dentists participate in Medicaid, and 17 percent of the state's population lives in an area with a shortage of dentists.

Pediatric dentist Craig Hollander says teaching children about the importance of dental health also means teaching their parents.

And he says dental costs for kids who have their first visit before age one are 40 percent lower in the first 5 years than kids who are not seen before their first birthday.
