The Nikkei is up 32 points today in Japan.
On Wall Street, the Dow fell 18 points Thursday.
And the Nasdaq lost 9.


The Labor Department releases its December unemployment report before the opening bell sounds on Wall Street.  Investors expect the economy added 190,000 workers last month and that the unemployment rate held steady at 7 percent.

Alcoa got earnings season off to a disappointing start. The aluminum maker reported quarterly profits that fell short of estimates.     

The recent deep freeze that gripped much of country this past week  may have cost the economy about $5 billion. One business, Weather Intelliegence Company, attributes that price tag to thousands  of canceled flights and burst pipes from the Midwest to the Southeast. The polar vortex also kept many people home rather than working.

What are you looking forward to this year? A new pew research center poll finds 58 percent of Americans are looking forward to next month's Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. 55 percent are also looking forward to next month's Super Bowl. Just 24 percent say they're looking forward to the Academy Awards.
