MAYFLOWER, Ark. -- Tornadoes left piles of rubble across central Arkansas, leaving dozens of families to sift through the debris for anything they can salvage. One military veteran in Mayflower, whose house turned into rubble, got a helping hand.

"Being in Vietnam and that, Vietnam ain't nothing compared to the way this area is right now," says Arvid Straschinske, veteran.

Arvid Straschinske says he lost hope of ever finding his most prized possession.

"I didn't think I'd ever see them again. I really didn't because like you said I mean look at this," says Straschinske.

That was until Jessica Mesko with Sheep Dog, showed up determined to dig for Straschinske's military medals.

"I don't know why I just stopped and thought I was pulling some stuff off and throwing things and just thought this isn't the right spot. I don't know know something just told me. I think God led me to it," says Mesko.

Mesko powered through the rubble as Straschinske watched her sift through debris and pulled a box out from behind some insulation.

"I held it up and said is this it?" says Mesko.

"Well I started balling like a little wuss," says Straschinske.

"And then I started crying and I opened it and looked and there was everything," says Mesko.

The box was in perfect condition. Straschinske's medals still entact.

"You could tell it really meant a lot to him and that what we're really here about," says Mesko.

To Straschinske, these medals are a symbol of his American pride and strength to overcome life's biggest obstacles.

"You really can't put it into words. You've got to go through it," says Straschinske.

And he's thankful, a stranger instilled that hope of ever seeing his medals again.

"At the end of the day it really comes down to moments like that," says Mesko.
