SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Soccer success swells American pride Monday night; the United States had its first match of the World Cup.

Fans gathered in downtown Springfield to cheer for a victory.

Team USA faced Ghana and the Americans won 2 to 1.

Some fans shared why they love the World Cup.

"It's the most popular game around the world,” says Riley Daniels. “It's something to really bring the world together and that's what I love about it. It's something sometimes in this country we don't embrace as much but we're still into it a little bit, we get to cheer for our team you know?"

"Yeah one month, every four years, everyone in the world forgets their problems and get together to celebrate an awesome game,” says Frank Ortman.

Team USA is scheduled to play Portugal next on Sunday, June 22, at 5 p.m.
