Legends Team Up For Cash

The Legends of golf will be teaming up at Top of the Rock.
RIDGEDALE, Mo--The legends are starting to arrive at Top of the Rock golf course.

Tom watson and gary player took in practice rounds as they study this new course.

They are also building team unity with their partners.

Yes this legends event is a team competition.

When you think of team sports, football, baseball and basketball come to mind.

But not golf.

That is until this week at Big Cedar Lodge.

The Champions Tour, Legends of Golf features two-man teams.

"It's much different in our case, Charlie makes the birdies and I ride.  That's the simplest form of success.  We enjoy playing with each other," said Dale Douglass.

Dale Douglass and Charles Coody first met on the PGA Tour when John F. Kennedy was president.

And the two old friends will play another round together this weekend at Top of the Rock.

"It doesn't matter who does what.  Just as long as somebody does something," said Charles Coody. "We don't get mad at each other if someone hits a bad shot.  At our age we'd be mad all the time."

The Champions Tour pros feel pressure to not leave their partners with difficult shots.

"It's a little hard to shift gears, especially in an alternate shot format, " said Doug Tool.  "If you're on the putting green you want to try to knock it in so you don't leave a guy a 3-4 footer coming back.  Sometimes the tempo of the partnership is a little difficult."

"Team play is fun, unless you hit it out of bounds and you're first off the tee," John Jacobs.  "I'm playing with Fuzzy (Zoeller) and he's pretty easy.  I'd say 80 percent of the people are playing with good friends or they wouldn't want to play in this tournament."

It's not just friends playing with friends.

It's also about money $2.75 million dollars worth of prize money will be handed out this weekend at Top of the Rock.

Coody:"Don't get me wrong.  everybody love money.  I'm no different than anybody else.  We're glad to be able to play for a little bit of money."
