SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Layoffs are planned later this month for some support staff at the Mercy Health System in Springfield and elsewhere, hospital officials confirmed Wednesday.

200-300 employees across seven states are expected to lose their jobs in the consolidation, according to a statement from Sonya Kullman, Senior Media Relations Specialist at Mercy Springfield.
Mercy employees about 40,000 people system wide, which includes hosptials in Springfield, Joplin and Fort Smith, Arkansas.

In an email statement, Kullmann said the changing market of medical care is prompting the belt tightening.  No positions are being eliminated that have direct patient care impact, she said.
"Like all health care providers, Mercy is managing the impact of market changes, including reimbursement reductions from government and commercial payers, as well as lack of Medicaid expansion in most of the states we serve. We have been expecting and preparing for these changes for several years and have made tremendous progress in redesigning the health delivery system to meet evolving needs."

"As part of our transformation, we have consolidated many non-patient care support services to streamline how we work and achieve greater efficiencies. We are in the process of further reorganizing our support services across all Mercy communities and anticipate reductions in that workforce ranging from 200 to 300 positions later this month."

The Springfield Mercy hospital employs about 9,000 people, according to figures from the Springfield Business Development Corporation.  It is the top employer in Springfield.  Kullmann told KOLR10 News the number of layoffs in Springfield, Joplin and Berryville is not known yet.
