A Springfield man got quite the scare when riding his lawn mower this weekend in his yard on West Arlington Street.  He ran over a sparkler bomb which caused a loud explosion right beneath him and air-lifted his mower.

The man says he's lucky that he escaped unharmed.  Plus, the mower still works.  The brave man was already back riding the same mower on his lawn on West Arlington street today.

The resident says he doesn't know how the sparkler bomb wound up in his front yard.  He says he saw the object on the ground when he was riding his mower yesterday, but he didn't think much of it.  He added that he did not expect it to cause the explosion it did.

Greene County Sheriff's deputies responded to the location.  The homeowner says the blast sent the entire mower well over three inches off of the ground.  Plus, neighbors as far away as several blocks say they heard the explosion.

"It was very loud we thought it was a transformer that went out ... at first, until we saw the smoke.  Just very loud and we were afraid he was hurt. So we ran up there, but he was okay," says Deryl Marsell, a neighbor who heard the explosion.

The man says now he is being very careful about not mowing over unfamiliar objects.  Greene County Sheriff, Jim Arnott, says although no one was injured in this case, innocent people can get seriously hurt when others are careless and irresponsible.
