Juanita K. Hammons Dies at 96

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Local arts patron Juanita K. Hammons has died at a Springfield nursing home at the age 96.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-- Juanita K. Hammons, a patron of the local arts scene and wife of Springfield philanthropist John Q. Hammons, died Tuesday.  She was 96.

According to a news release, Mrs. Hammons died at Elfindale Manor where she had been living since 2008.

Juanita K. Hammons was born in 1917 in Marionville, Missouri and grew up on a farm. She got a teaching degree at what was then Southwest Missouri State Teacher's College, then met and married John Q. Hammons in 1949. 

Springfield's performing arts center on the Missouri State University campus is named for Mrs. Hammons.  She was a supporter of the arts in Springfield for many years.

Mrs. Hammons was preceded in death by her husband, John Q. Hammons, who passed May 26, 2013.

Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield is handling funeral arrangement. Details for a memorial service are being arranged.
