Hometown Hero Rings Bell to Inspire Others to Give

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- You see and hear them as you enter shopping centers; The Salvation Army bell ringers.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- You see and hear them as you enter shopping centers; The Salvation Army bell ringers.

But, there's one 67-year-old volunteer who rings the bell more than 50 hours a week and didn’t even let the recent winter weather keep her away.

“Have a good afternoon,” says Lorraine Griffin, a bell ringer that frequently volunteers at the bright red kettles.

It's a greeting that welcomes shoppers at the Dillon’s at St. Louis St. and National Ave. day and night, 6 days a week during the holiday season.

Come rain, snow or shine.

“She's here all the time and anytime I'm coming or going, it doesn’t matter the weather or temperature, she's always here,” says David Satterlee. “I couldn't do it; I don't know how she does it. I mean that's very giving person.”

Lorraine is legally blind, but she sees the need in the community and volunteers her time as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army; nearly 10 hours, 6 days a week for the past four years.

Her husband is usually by her side, but his health keeps him inside right now.

“It’s because it's something that we have been blessed with the privilege of being able to do and it's a need,” says Lorraine. “And it's the true spirit of Christmas, giving to others.”

The customers at Dillon’s get to know her, appreciate her and give.

“It takes people like this to make this country what it is and it also takes people contributing to make this country what it is,” says Satterlee.

If she could have one wish, Lorraine would wish for more volunteers to help more people in the community.

“All the other volunteers who get out here no matter how much time they give every little bit helps,” says Lorraine. “It makes this program a good and viable program because of the generosity of the community.”

KOLR 10 is ready to help the Salvation Army as well and we hope you'll join us.

The Bucket Blitz is next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at Battlefield Mall.

We encourage you to stop by, and give what you can.
