SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A local volunteer was recently honored by the Council of Churches of the Ozarks and City of Springfield as a woman dedicated to helping mothers and their children in the community.

Getting an oil change is a must, but for single mothers, widows and women whose husbands are deployed it can be a financial struggle.

“Oh yeah, this saves me about $30 to 40 dollars,” says Laura Powell. “So it’s a big difference whenever you're living on a budget.”

Powell is a single mother of five. She brought her family van to the Central Assembly of God where she got a free oil change. Something so minor can make big changes in their lives.

“Oh it’s wonderful,” says Powell. “Especially for being a single mother. It’s hard to get things done on your car like oil changes and this service is free so it helps so that I can use that money for other things that I need for my children.”

Beyond the walls oil change is a service provided through the church. But the woman behind the local effort is Karla McHaffie, who is dedicated to helping mothers in our community.

“We felt this was a need that was not really being addressed,” says McHaffie. “We have a lot of single moms in the community especially those that just have trouble with keeping their cars in good running order and then that just snowballs into great expenses and sometimes no vehicle at all which really puts them a big disadvantage and its really hard for their children as well.”

McHaffie and members of her church offer more than free oil changes. They find ways to help these mothers get school supplies, food and perhaps most importantly that offer continuous support.

“We are just really, really thankful to be able to help serve these ladies in the community and to be there for them,” says McHaffie. “Not just necessarily to change their oil but to befriend them and to let them know that we cared so that's our main goal.”

McHaffie has become a dear friend to mothers like Powell, who's working so hard to provide a good and safe life for her children.

The cost of the oil, filters and services were donated by members of the church and community.

The oil changes are offered once every month except December.
