Historic Trees Are Down In Springfield, But Not From Weather

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- There are trees down at the Solo Cup Plant on Glenstone, but not because of Thursday's weather. The property looks a little different than it did Wednesday in that there are now historic trees that have been knocked down. Neighboring business owners tell us the trees were standing when they left work around 6 p.m. Wednesday. Thursday morning, they were being chopped down and some people aren't happy about it.

The Solo Cup Plant closed back in 2011.  The plant operated in Springfield for nearly 60 years.

Pam RuBert, Co-Owner of RuBert Studios-- a neighboring business, says her and her husband have worked across the street from the property for about 15 years.

RuBert has served on the Springfield, Greene County Park Board for six years and says she's sad to see the trees go.

RuBert tells us when she left work Wednesday night, the trees were still standing.  By the time she went into work Thursday morning, at least three trees had been cut down.

"They were huge-- really really large trees, and I've watched them every day from my window for the last 15 years," she says.  "But I know they survived the 2007 ice storm that killed a lot of historic trees in town so I know they were tough, pretty healthy old trees.  I don't know what the intentions are for the property and I am a little concerned about it because is it going to be industrial?  Is there going to be a huge increase in truck traffic?"

KOLR10 News did reach out to Davis Properties, the owner of the property, to find out more about why the trees were cut down.  We have not heard back from them yet.

RuBert tells KOLR10 the Solo Cup Factory is a part of this community's history and she'd like to see some of it preserved.
