SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A historic sign was returned to the Fox Theatre in downtown Springfield.
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A historic sign was returned to the Fox Theatre in downtown Springfield.

Neon sign collector Ed Mitchem found the sign at an antique store.

The sign is a small neon light box that originally hung inside the box office window at the theatre to let people know when the box office was open.

Mitchem says he feels great giving it back to its rightful owner and everyone is very excited for its return.

"It's very bright and it'll look great in front of the theater,” says Mitchem.

John Sellars, with the History Museum on the Square says the sign is a vital piece to preserve Springfield’s history.

"The more things we have, the more things we have where we can tell the story, and learn more about this city, we find out how we've become who we are today,” says Sellars. “It's vital for us to preserve them cause we lose them every day."

Mitchem says he found the sign three years ago.

He laughed, saying for the last three years, it's made a lot of noise in his garage.
